• mail read pointer

This is probably a pie in the sky request, but is there any chance that
mystic could track the read/unread status of individual messages instead of a date pointer?

I use the global personal scan in my login process, but if I read the
messages that are directly related to me then any message in that echo prior
to that is marked as read. So I have taken to saying 'No' to reading the global personal scan messages, and noting the echos in which I have replies waiting, and then starting from the top unread message.

I understand this will take up some amount of resources, but I don't think it would be too horrible.

Alternatively, Thunderbird doesn't have this issue when using the built in mailer, but as g00r00 had previously stated it doesn't really fully work. I
am unable to properly send replies, and thunderbird gets confused on message numbers, and if you click on a message you are not guaranteed to be reading that message and not a cached previous message.

So, really I don't care what method is required to get me there, I would just like to be able to track which messages I have read (so on a per user basis)

I do have a system coded to do that, but it falls outside of JAM. You can
see it in action in th "threddit.exe" demo in the prealpha area.

The message numbers should be the same if you're not packing/renumbering your message bases. Thats a temporary fix until I get around to revamping the
    news server.

Newgroups do not have a "To" field so I think Thunderbird tries to reply by e-mail if I remember correctly.

You can tell it not to update your last read like that during a global scan
by using the /NOREAD option in the message read, new scan or quick scan.

    Yeah that seems reasonable

Oh hm, yeah it was more like if i opened message 1, it was message 1 from a different echo. I am packing nightly too, that may be part of it.

    Oh sweet :)

I think some readers will have an options like "Post followup" that work more like a reply that we're used to on the BBS.

Ahh I see what you're saying.

I will try to make it a point to get that stuff fixed up and I'll test with the newsreader you're using to be sure. The readers I generally use I don't believe have the same problem because of the way they handle message IDs. But regardless it is a fault on the Mystic side that I need to rework. Maybe I can get some time tomorrow to take a look at it.

I think you can use the "X-Apparently-From" kludge to make it seem like a traditional bbs reply. DM does this with Synchronet.

If you have an alternate reader that works as is I'm happy to change to a different client.

In a lot of newsreaders, Reply sends an email to the poster, by default. You have to use Followup to reply in the newsgroup. It is possible to tweak Thunderbird to change its behaviour, others have done that. I haven't bothered, because for me, NNTP was just an experiment.

... As a matter of fact, it IS a banana in my pocket.

Hmm, I looked and I do have the /NOREAD set in the scan, but maybe the issue
is replying to the message? Either way my read pointer is being jumped
forward I just tested it out.
